What should I look for when touring an assisted living facility in Sarasota?

Look at how staff speak to residents, whether residents are engaged or idle, cleanliness, the dining experience, and the overnight staffing plan, then check the state record before you return.

Visit twice, once unannounced near a mealtime.

What records should I check before choosing?

Check the AHCA profile (license, specialty licenses, sanctions, ownership changes), the inspection history, and for nursing homes the CMS Care Compare page.

Our facility pages show all three for larger ALFs and every nursing home.

How important is the facility's location?

Very: families visit more often when the drive is short, and visits improve care, so weigh distance from the people who will visit most, and the nearest hospital.

Facility pages list the two nearest acute-care hospitals.

Should we choose a facility with a specialty license?

If needs are likely to grow, yes: an LNS or ECC license lets a facility handle more nursing tasks and, with ECC, keep residents longer.

Ask whether specialty services cover the whole building.

What contract terms matter most?

Rates and what they include, level-of-care fees, how increases are noticed, refund and deposit terms, the 45-day discharge notice, and what happens during a hospital stay.

Ask for the contract in advance and read it at home.

How do I compare two facilities objectively?

Compare the same facts for both: license and specialty licenses, overnight staffing, total monthly cost at your parent's care level, recent citations and fines, and distance.

Write them in two columns before deciding.

Should I use a placement or referral service?

A referral service can save time, but ask how it is paid and whether it shows you every licensed option or only partners; ours is paid by facilities and our directory lists every license regardless.

Check any recommendation against the state record.

Does a newer building mean better care?

Not necessarily; care depends on staffing, training and leadership more than construction date, so compare inspection histories and staffing for newer and older buildings alike.

First-licensed dates are on every facility page.

How much should the AHCA memory care flag weigh in my choice?

Treat it as a starting point: the flag is reported by the facility, so confirm what the memory care program actually includes, whether staff are dementia-trained, and whether the facility plans to obtain the new s. 429.076 license.

Ask to visit the memory care area itself.

Should I worry about a facility's change of ownership?

Not automatically, but a sale within the last few years is a reason to ask which leaders stayed, whether staffing and rates changed, and how the most recent inspection went under the new owner.

AHCA's profile records each change of ownership with its date.
