What is the difference between assisted living and memory care in Florida?
Both happen inside a licensed Florida ALF; memory care adds dementia-specific activities, a secured or monitored environment, specially trained staff and at least one awake staff member at all hours, and under s. 429.076 it will require its own memory care services license once AHCA's rules take effect.
Today the operative standard is s. 429.178 for facilities that advertise special Alzheimer's care. In Sarasota and Manatee counties, 63 of the 128 licensed ALFs list a memory care program on their AHCA profiles, with 5,771 licensed beds between them (the beds are not all memory care beds).
When does someone need memory care instead of assisted living?
Usually when dementia brings wandering or exit-seeking, nighttime confusion, unsafe behavior, or an inability to follow the routines of a general assisted living floor; memory loss alone, with a resident who still navigates safely, can often be managed in standard assisted living.
A facility's admission assessment and the physician's examination decide placement. Ask whether the facility can move a resident from its general floor to its memory care wing without a new contract.
Does memory care cost more than assisted living in Sarasota?
Typically yes, but no Florida or Sarasota memory care median is published; facilities usually add a dementia care charge to the base rate, so compare total monthly quotes in writing rather than base rents.
Florida's 2025 assisted living median is $66,000 a year. A memory care quote far below that is worth a careful look at staffing.
Can a resident with dementia stay in a standard Florida ALF?
Yes, as long as the resident still meets the facility's admission and continued-residency criteria under rule 59A-36.006, including not being a danger to self or others and not needing 24-hour nursing supervision; ECC facilities can keep residents longer under their own criteria.
When a facility gives notice that a resident must move, Florida requires 45 days' written notice except in emergencies.
Do Sarasota memory care communities accept residents on Medicaid?
Some do, through contracts with Florida Medicaid long-term care plans that pay for assisted living services, but Medicaid will not pay room and board, so a memory care resident on Medicaid still needs income or OSS to cover the rent and meals.
Ask the facility which long-term care plans it contracts with before your parent applies, because plan networks differ.
